Baden Powell Challenge Award

The Baden-Powell Challenge Award is the highest award a Guide can gain. It should be personally challenging and involves sustained effort over a period of time. To complete the Baden-Powell Challenge Award a Guide takes part in a Baden-Powell Adventure.

At what age can a Guide start her BP Award?

There is no age restriction for a Guide to start the Baden-Powell Award, however she will need to have

• made her Promise

• gained at least two Guide Challenge Badges

• gained at least two interest badges.

Taking into account the above requirements, a Guide is usually at least 12 years old before starting the BP Award.

When starting her Baden-Powell Award, a Guide MUST complete the Baden Powell Award Registration Form (2016 version)

How long should it take to complete the Award?

There is no time restriction for a Guide to complete the Award, however it is recommended that the challenge takes no more than 18 months to complete.

The Award must be completed while the girl is still a Guide (still registered on Go! as a Guide, not having taken her Senior Section promise)

What is a Baden-Powell Adventure?

To complete the Award, your Guide needs to take part in a Baden-Powell Adventure. This is a celebration of all she has achieved in guiding so far and is not subject to any kind of formal assessment. The Baden-Powell Adventure will have some kind of residential aspect e.g. overnight, weekend, or a midweek residential event. The Adventure must not be part of a unit event – this enables the Guides to take part in something beyond their usual experiences.

It is recommended that a Guide attends the Adventure after her 14th birthday, but before her 16th birthday due to the nature of activities involved. However, some allowances can be made in exceptional circumstances, please discuss with your County BP Advisor

How will I know when the BP Adventures are running?

How is the BP Adventure funded?

The Baden-Powell Adventure is £50, which is split in the following way:

£10 from the Guide

£10 from the Unit

£30 from County

The full amount must be paid prior to the event and sent along with the application form. In the event of a Guide not being able to attend after submitting payment, the Guide and Unit contribution is non-refundable. The remaining amount can be claimed back by the Unit from the relevant area after attendance

What if a Guide can’t make the next Adventure?

Bedfordshire's international weekends can also count as a Baden Powell Adventure, so it is worth checking when they are happening. Any Guide is welcome to attend Baden-Powell Adventures in another county or one of the many ICANDO Baden-Powell Adventures. Please see either the Girlguiding Anglia website or the Girlguiding UK website for further details.

If your Guide does choose to attend an Adventure outside of the County, please inform the County BP Advisor of attendance so that she may confirm successful completion of the Award.

What happens once a Guide has attended the Adventure and completed the Award?

She will receive a certificate of attendance for the residential Adventure
