Haverings is surrounded by approximately 8 acres of woodland (an Old English Wood) and field all fenced in and secure. The grounds are home to various wild life, including birds, bats, hedgehogs, squirrels and deer.
Haverings was built in 1970 to serve as a Training ground for Luton Division Guides. Since that date it has been extended to accommodate a large dormitory, a Leaders’/meeting room with en-suite facilities, an outside toilet block for campers and the kitchen has doubled in size. It is situated approximately 4 miles from Luton town centre and about 2 miles from the airport. Access from the M1 and main A505 is quite direct.
The building and grounds can only be booked by Leaders within the Guide and Scout Organisations for Residential holidays, Camps and Guiding events.
Dormitory: carpeted with 28 bunk beds and chairs for bags or clothes. Sleeping bags or duvets, bottom sheets and pillows are needed.
Leader’s/small Meeting Room: carpeted with a wardrobe, bedside tables, 1 single bed, 4 single sofa beds, 2 armchairs and a coffee table. Also an en-suite bathroom with a shower over the bath, basin and toilet.
Kitchen: fully equipped with 8-ring gas cooker, water heater, toasters, fridge-freezer and microwave.
There are plenty of pans, oven dishes, crockery, cutlery, serving dishes, preparation equipment.
Children’s bathroom: 5 toilets, a private cubicle with a basin, 2 showers, 6 basins, plenty of hooks for towels and wash bags, clothes airers.
Suite for the disabled: wet-room shower, basin and adapted toilet.
Gents/leaders’ bathroom: 2 toilets, basin, mop sink.
First Aid room: 2 bunk beds, basin.
Main hall: Ample tables, chairs, display boards, flag pole, indoor camp fire, table cloths for craft work and painting.
Entrance hall: telephone and hooks for coats, cupboard with cleaning utensils(mops, brooms, “Henry” and dustpans) and a rotary washing line & pegs.
Central heating runs throughout the building and constant hot water is available.
Details of doctor, dentist, hospital, churches, etc. are on the notice board in the Leaders’ room.
Shop for official uniforms, books, badges: this is held in the main hall every two weeks on a Wednesday during term time 7.00 – 8.30pm. Enquiries or orders can be made through Jane – email: haveringsdepot@bedsguiding.org.uk
Souvenirs: details of items will be sent after booking and are available for sale during your stay.
Patio area: adjoining the building, with hole a for a rotary washing line (kept in broom cupboard)
Field: very large field for camping at the top and activities on the remainder with a main campfire and 3-4 smaller patrol fire pits, flagpole and 6 acres of Old English woods.
Camp fire: seating around fire pit and a wood pile. Campers and indoor groups should liaise about use.
Outside toilet block: 3 toilets, 3 basins, a shower and hooks for wash bags.
Sluice room: for emptying chemical toilets (if used) and stop cock for outside water tap.
Fridge-freezer for campers’ use: in outside store cupboard along with a telephone.
Large marquee: available for hire (hires are responsible for erection and dismantling)
Car park: A good sized tarmac car park. The field can be used by campers if needed or for extra parking for a large event.
